FRAC Corsica

Founded in 1986, the FRAC Corsica is a cultural establishment of the Collectivity of Corsica. Its missions include the constitution of a collection of contemporary art, the organization of exhibitions (in its spaces in Corti but also outside its first site), as well as an awareness to the current esthetic creation which passes by an important work of mediation, in particular towards the school public.

In 2022, the FRAC Corsica has 505 works, which makes it the second largest public art collection in Corsica, after the Fesch Museum in Ajaccio. Its collection is international in scope and is structured around two axes, the first linked to the issues of the Anthropocene, which renews approaches to landscape, and the second around questions of identity and their critical interpretation. The FRAC Corsica is developing partnerships on the island as well as on a national and European level.

Corsica: a breeding ground for artistic experimentation

It goes without saying that FRAC Corsica contributes to the development of contemporary art on the island. This means helping to network the various initiatives that have been visible in Corsica over the past few years, in order to energize the current scene. To this end, it is keen to encourage meetings between local institutions, such as Providenza in Pieve and Casellarte in Venaco, the Casa Conti – Ange Leccia laboratories in Oletta and U Staccone in Moltifao, or the Biennale de Bonifacio De Renava. In this rural area, it’s important that these actions are not strictly isolated, but that together they map a shifting and fragile ecosystem, specific to minority expressions. The FRAC therefore plays a full part in the creation of this biotope. But it is also committed to forging links with other Mediterranean, European and international scenes. For an island, the challenge of opening up to the world is crucial, as its geographical borders constitute a natural distance from other lands. In this way, FRAC Corsica aims to avoid the contradiction of modernity highlighted by Bruno Latour: “being attached to the land on the one hand; globalizing on the other”. The aim here is to combine these two perspectives in a single movement, making Corsica a living ground for artistic experimentation. There’s no doubt that the resulting hybridizations create new ways of feeling, living and experiencing.
