The Frac Sud – Cité de l’art contemporain is inviting artist Éléonore False to present within its walls a solo exhibition unprecedented in scale, showing a decade of creations and research exploring the image and its worlds of imagination.

The exhibition title “Le Fil de chaîne” (“Warp Thread”) is borrowed from the vocabulary of fabric production, referring to the warp that, by intersecting with the weft, enables fabric to be created. It is through this interweaving that seven series of works converse in the space, in the form of a large installation.

By subverting the flatness of the image, by reversing front and back, she encourages us to question what we believe we see and know. It is about going beyond appearances, touching the ambivalence, multiplicity and diversity of living things, while revealing efforts to establish social and artistic hierarchies. The artist encourages us to free ourselves from the stereotypical dichotomies on which our perspective has been built: “decorative arts” vs fine arts”, “ornament” vs “superior creative gesture”, “female art” vs “male art”.

Through a highly diverse repertoire of forms, Éléonore False endeavors to highlight the complexity of living material through a change of scale or through a creative image-manipulation process. She collects, photographs, scans, prints, mounts, assembles, weaves, sews, models, cooks, transposes and reinterprets colors and textures through a clever play of materials and formats. The works of Éléonore False speak to us about the multiple meanings of images, and their ability to accommodate the visible and invisible diversity of the forms that surround us.

Éléonore False’s work has received support from Magnetic – Fluxus Art Project, and was selected by the sponsorship committee of the Fondation des Artistes. This exhibition is part of Les Rencontres d’Arles program, through its Grand Arles Express initiative.
