Claire Fontaine was founded in Paris in 2004 and presents itself as a «ready-made artist», creating sculptures, paintings, texts, videos and installations. Claire Fontaine appropriates symbols of Western culture - including the name of a famous French stationery brand as a surname - to denounce the abuses of the contemporary world. It appropriates signs of popular or artistic culture – mainly the work carried out in the 1960s and 1970s by minimalist, conceptual and situationist artists – to criticize, denounce or question the world and the world of art in particular, linking art and politics and seeking to engage the public.
